crt televisions, 3-channel video, brightsign media players, lamps
This project originated from my own perplexity about humans and life, inspired by Edward Yang’s movies, and by my unresolved question: it seems like we will never be able to fully understand other humans the same as ourselves.
So how do we grow as humans? How do we truly understand other people, if that’s even possible? I cannot feel the same way you do. But I want to, I want to be able to understand. I'm fascinated by the idea of human interactions, and through interaction and the emotional landscapes they shape, we feel, resonate, and care.
In Red Blue Green, I explored these questions in a tangible way. I tried to mimic the life process of humans. Each CRT TV goes through stages from birth, childhood, teenagehood, middle age, and ultimate death, either self-exploring or talking to other TVs. They propose their questions, get their answers, may run into disagreements, or may share similar experiences. Throughout the process, each has its own personality and converses across a variety of topics about love, care, honesty, and shame across the space. By framing only one character in each TV, I want them to be viewed as a physical entity, as a single human being. The audience is invited to watch and participate in their conversation and evolution.
